REVERED GURU NANAK

THE DEEP REVERENCE FOR GURU NANAK

All Sikhs revere Guru Nanak Sahib as the greatest soul ever to be born in this world.  He enlightened the whole world by dispelling ignorance and disseminating the Word of God. He travelled for about 22 years and visited almost all the countries in south-west Asia including India and Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, Parts of Russia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.  His Divine Message was the same for the whole humanity.   He is still revered by many Muslims, Hindus and of course by Sikhs.  Bhatts (a lower class of Brahmans) who came to the shelter of the Third Guru, Sri Amar Dass Ji, have written a lot in the praise of the first five Guru Sahiban.  Their compositions have been enshrined in Guru Granth Sahib.

But even Guru Sahiban - mostly Guru Arjun Sahib and Guru Ram Dass Sahib - have written many Shabads in the praise of Guru Nanak Sahib.  We will start with Savuyye (a form of lyrics) by Guru Arjun Sahib, the Fifth Guru.

§ Ekonkar SatNaam Kerta Purakh Nirbhau Nirvair Akal Moorat Ajooni Saibhann Gur Persad.

The Lyric of Praise by Guru Arjun Sahib

Aad Purakh Kartaar kern kaaran subh aapay. Serb ruhiyo  bharpoor sagal ghut ruhiyo biyaapay.  Biyaapat dekheeyay jagat jaanaiy kaun tery gut serb kee rukhiya kurraiy aapay Hur Put.  Abinaashi abigut aapay aap ootpat. Eikaiy toohi eikaiy un naahi toom bhut.  Hur unt naahi paaravaar kaun hai kuray beechaar jagat pita hai serb praan ko adhaar. Jun Nanak bhagat der tool Braham sumsur eik jeeh kiya bakhaanaiy.  Haan ki bul bul bul bul sud balihaar. 1.

Meaning: God which pervades the whole universe and has been there ever since is also the sole creator of the whole universe.  He is omnipresent and is filling every heart.  His existence can be felt (seen) in the world, but nobody can describe Him. The Master Waheguru looks after all His creation.  He is self-illuminating, is formless and is non-destructible. He is unique and nobody is like Him.  Nobody can conceptualize Him because He is limitless. The father of the universe, Waheguru, sustains all life. However, with His devotion, Guru Nanak is just like Him (has acquired the noble qualities of Waheguru).  With just one tongue, how can I (Guru Arjun Dev Ji) describe all the qualities of Guru Nanak Sahib (there are too many to be described). I (Guru Arjun Dev Ji) can only sacrifice my life for Guru Nanak Sahib over and over again.

Amrit purvaah sur atool bhandaar bhur purray hee tay purraiy upper apaar pur.  Aapno bhaavun kur muntar na doosro dhur oaput perlau eikaiy nimakh tu ghur.  Aan naahi sumsur ujiyaaro nirmur kote prachhat jaahay naam liyay Hur Hur. Jun Nanak bhagat der tool Braham sumsur eik jeeh kiya bakhaanaiy. Haan ki bul bul bul bul sud balihaar. 2.

Meaning: Limitless Waheguru’s limitless treasures are full with the pools of Amrit (the liquid of immortality – His Naam Amrit).  He does only what He wishes and nobody else can advise Him. He has the ability to create or destroy the universe in a moment.  His radiance is perfectly clean and millions of sins can be destroyed by worshipping Him.  None else is like Him. However, through His devotion, Guru Nanak has acquired Waheguru’s qualities and is just like Him. How can I (Guru Arjun Dev Ji) describe all His (Guru Nanak Sahib’s) noble qualities with a single tongue?  I can only sacrifice my life for Guru Nanak Sahib over and over again.

Sagal Bhavun dharay eik thay keeye bisthaaray poor ruhiyo serb menh aap hai niraaray. Hur goon naahi unt paaray jee junt subh thaaray sagal ko daata eikaiy alakh muraaray. Aap hee dhaaran dhaaray kudrat hai dekhaaray bern chehan naahi mookh na masaaray.  Jun Nanak bhagat der tool Braham sumsur eik jeeh kiya bakhaanaiy. Haan ki bul bul bul bul sud balihaar. 3.

Meaning: Waheguru has created the whole universe from Himself and is supporting all the skies.  He is pervading the whole universe, yet He is completely unaffected by it. All living beings are created by Waheguru but His qualities are un-describable.  The Muraari (it is one of the names of Lord Krishna, but is used for Waheguru) and the un-describable Waheguru is the sole provider for all the living beings.  As can be seen from His Nature, He is the only supporter of everything even though He does not have any physical form, face or beard.  By His devotion, Guru Nanak Sahib has acquired all the noble qualities of Waheguru (is just like Him).  How can I (Guru Arjun Sahib) describe all the noble qualities of Guru Nanak Sahib with a single tongue?  I can only sacrifice my life for Him over and over again.

Serb goon nidhaanan keemat na gyanan dhiyanan oochay tay oochou jaaneejaiy Prabh tayro thaanan. Mun dhun tayro praanan eikaiy soot hai jahaanan. Kavun oopma deyoun budday tay buddanan. Jaanay kaun tayro bheyo alakh apaar deyo ukull kalaa hai Prabh serb ko dhaanan. Jun Nanak bhagat der tool Braham sumsur eik jeeh kiya bakhanay. Haan ki bul bul bul bul sud balihaar. 4.

Meaning: Waheguru is the treasure of all the good qualities which cannot be evaluated even by the most knowledgeable and people with great concentration. Waheguru possesses higher than highest level of good qualities and powers. The lives, the minds and the wealth of the whole universe are a gift by Waheguru.  The universe is controlled by the laws created by Waheguru. You are greater than the greatest oh Waheguru!  How can I praise You (have no ability to praise You).  Who can know your secrets, oh formless and limitless Waheguru – the source of light!  You never change, and remain uniform. You support everything.  However, Your devotee, Guru Nanak Sahib, has achieved equality with you by His devotion.  I cannot describe His (Guru Nanak Sahib’s) qualities with a single tongue.  I can only sacrifice my life for Him over and over again.

Nirankaar akaar achhull pooran abinashi. Herkhwant aanant roop nirmal bigaasi. Goon gaavhe bayunt unt ikk til nuhee paasi. Jaa kou hoye kirpaal so jun Prabh toomhay milaasi. Dunn dhunn tay dhunn jun jih kirpaal Hur Hur bhuyyo.  Hur Gur Nanak jin persiyo se janam mern doonh thay ruhiyo. 5.

Meaning: You have a formless entity; are completely non-destructible, and nobody can outsmart you, oh Waheguru!  You have countless forms, are always happy and are piously joyful.  Countless living beings sing Your praise but cannot find Your limits even to the size of a sesame seed (smallest degree).  Those individuals become one with You to whom You are kind.  Such individuals are great (worthy of worship) to whom You are kind. For those who can have a holy sight (who act on the teachings) of Guru Nanak – a manifestation of You – the birth-death cycle is broken.

Sut sut Hur sut sut sutay sut bhunniye. Doosar aan na uver purakh pouraatan sooniye. Amrit Hur ko naam lait mun subh sookh paaye. Jeh rusan chaakhiyo the jun tripat aghaaye. Jih Thaakur supersunn bhuyo sutsangat teh piyaar. Hur Gur Nanak jinh persiyo tinh subh kool keeyo oodhaar. 6.

Meaning: Waheguru is everlasting and never changing, oh my friend!  We must always utter His Naam.  There is none else as old and omnipresent as Waheguru.  His Naam is the real Amrit (the life sustaining liquid of immortality) and whoever recites His Naam enjoys all the comforts.  Whoever tastes His Naam with the tongue becomes completely content. An individual, with whom Waheguru is pleased, develops affection and respect for the company of the holy men.  Whoever gets the sight of Guru Nanak – a manifestation of Waheguru – is able to salvage all the members of his clan.

Such subha deebaan such Suchay peh dhariyo. Suchaiy takhut nivaas such tapaavus kuriyo.  Such sirjiyo sunsaar aap abhool na bhulou.  Rattan naam apaar keem nuho puvaiy amoollou. Jih kirpaal hoyo Gobind serb sookh tinhoo paaye. Hur Gur Nanak jinh persiyo tay bahoor phir joan na aaye. 7.

Meaning: Everlasting is the company of Waheguru, and so is His Court. Waheguru has placed Himself (all His qualities) in the perfect Guru (He can be realized only through the Guru).  He occupies a never-changing throne (His laws never change) and He always delivers justice.  He is infallible and never makes any mistakes. He has created the universe Himself. His Naam (praise) is a priceless pearl and cannot be evaluated.  Individuals who receive His benevolence acquire all the comforts.  Those who have seen (follow His Teachings) Guru Nanak  – a manifestation of Waheguru- are never born again. 7.

Kavun yoga kaun giyan dhiyan kavun bidh ustat kuriyaiy.  Sidh saadhik taytees kore tir keem na purriye. Brahamadik Sanukaad Sheikh goon unt na paaye.  Ughou guhiyo nahi jaaye poor serb ruhiyo smaaye. Jih kaati silk dyaal Prabh seye jun luggay bhagtay. Hur Gur Nanak jinh persiyo tay it oot suda mooktay.  8.

Meaning: (Even though their efforts do not result in connection with you), the Sidh yogis use different forms of yoga to connect with you.  (Since they are unsuccessful) what form of yoga, or what type of knowledge or what kind of concentration should one use to praise you, oh Waheguru!  Sidh yogis, their disciples or the 330 million (mythical) gods try their best to describe you, but they are unable to evaluate you even to the size of a sesame seed (they know almost nothing about you).  Gods like Brahma, his sons like Sunak, or even Sheshnaag (the mythical serpent which is used as bed by Lord Vishnu and which is believed to praise Waheguru all the time using different names for Him and never repeating any of them) are unable to find any limit to Waheguru’s qualities.  Even though Waheguru is omnipresent, yet He cannot be held physically. Those who have been able to break the bonds of Maya (see the definition of Maya in the article about it) through the kindness of Waheguru are able to worship Him.  Also those who have seen Guru Nanak Sahib get freedom from the strong bonds of Maya in this world and the next (after death).

Prabh daatou dataar puriyo jaachuk ik serna. Milaiy daan sant rain jeh lug bhaojul terna. Binit  kuroun ardaas soonhou jay Thakur bhaavaiy. Dehou ders mun chaaou bhagat eho mun thehraavaiy.  Buliyo charaag undhiyar menh subh kul oodhari ik naam dharam. Pergut sagal hur bhavun meh jun Nanak Gur Paarbraham.  9.

Meaning: Waheguru is the kind provider of all goods.  I have come to Your shelter as a beggar, oh Waheguru! I only wish for the dust of the feet of the Guru (Guru’s benevolence to enable me to act on His Teachings) which is needed to swim across the ocean of Maya (find salvation). If You would kindly permit, I have only one burning wish, oh Waheguru!  I beg and pray only for Your holy sight. Your sight will give peace to my fickle mind and will invoke Your worship. With Your kindness, Your manifestation - Guru Nanak - has appeared in this dark world as a powerful lamp which has eliminated the darkness of ignorance.  The whole world is finding salvation by reciting the spiritual Naam as advised by Him (Guru Nanak).

There are many more holy Shabads in praise of Guru Nanak Sahib. Let us discuss a few more.

NOTE: According to the grammar used in those days, even a slight change in spellings changed the meaning of the word.  For example, the word “Nanak” implied any of the six Guru Sahiban whose holy compositions have been enshrined in Guru Granth Sahib. The distinction was made only in the heading of the shabads.  For example M:4 (Mehla 4) means the Fourth Guru, Ram Dass Ji and so on.  However “Nanak(u) was used to refer only to Guru Nanak Sahib or the particular Guru Who wrote the Shabad; and that was done only where some humbleness was shown on the part of the particular Guru Sahib.

§ Sloak M:2 (150). Deekhiya aakh bujhaaya sifteen Such smayo. Tin kuou kiya oopdesiye jin Gur Nanak Deyo.

Meaning: Those who have been advised by Guru Nanak Sahib that praising Waheguru is the only way to realize Him, and have been connected with Waheguru, need no more advice, oh my friend!

Note: The Sikh history believes that this holy Shabad was uttered by Guru Angad Dev Ji when Baba Buddha Ji, a highly respected Sikh of Guru Nanak Sahib, requested Guru Angad Sahib to give Baba Ji some advice.

§ Assa Chant M:4 (452). Churh Chayt basant mayre piyaray bhulee rootay. Pir baajhriyoun mayre piyaray aangan dhoorh lootay. Mun aas udeeni mayre piyaray doye nain jootay. Gur(u) Nanak(u) daykh vigsee mayre piyaray jiyon maat sootay.

Meaning: Pleasant season of spring arrives with the month of Chayt, oh my dear Waheguru!  But, without the feeling of Waheguru, the dust (of ignorance) is filling the yard of my heart.  With the hope to see my dear Guru, both my eyes are focused in His path.  On seeing Guru Nanak (Sahib) my heart sprung into joy just as a mother is happy to see his son.

§ Suhi M:4 (732). Ek Onkar Satgur Persaad. Gurmat nagari khoj khojayee. Hur Hur Naam padarath paayee. ----------- Dhur mustak laykh likhay Hur paayee. Gur(u) Nanak(u) toottha maylaiy Hur bhaayee.

Meaning: Ek Onkar Satgur Parsad.  With the advice of the Guru I searched my body-town (mind) to look for Waheguru, and with His grace, I found Waheguru’s invaluable Naam in my heart.  But one connects with Waheguru only if it is written on one’s  forehead (predetermined) by Him.  When Guru Nanak becomes kind to someone, he realizes Waheguru.

§ Parbhati M:4 (1337). Mun laagi preet Ram Naam Hur Hur juppiyo Hur Prabh vudfa. Satgur bachan sukhaanay heeraiy Hur dhaari Hur kirpafa. ---------- Toomray jun toom hee tay jaanay Prabh jaaniyo jun tay mookhfa. Hur Hur aap dhariyo jun meh Jun Nanak(u) Hur Prabh ikkfa.

Meaning: I developed affection for Waheguru’s Naam and worshipped the Great Waheguru.  Because of Waheguru’s kindness I began to cherish Guru’s Word.  Your beloved bhagats (devotees) are famous in the world because of their devotion for you, oh Waheguru!   And your existence is confirmed through Your famous devotees, oh Waheguru!  Waheguru places Himself (is reflected in) in His favourite devotees, that’s why His dearest devotee, Guru Nanak is one with Waheguru and in indistinguishable from Him.

§ Sloak M:5 (322). Dharan suvunni khurrh ruttan jarraavi Hur praym Purakh mun voottha. Subbhay kaaj suhailrray theeye Gur(u) Nanak(u) Satgur(u) toottha.

Meaning: Just as the ground looks beautiful when it is covered with green grass with the pearl-like dew drops on it, the heart where loving Waheguru takes residence becomes very beautiful.  And all the tasks become very easy and enjoyable when Guru Nanak showers His kindness.

§ Assa M:5 (375). Prabh hoye kirpal ta ehu mun laayee. Satgur save subbhay ful paayee. ---------- Gur(u) Nanak(u) toottha miliya Hur Rai. Sookh rain vihaanee sehj subhaaye.

Meaning: When Waheguru becomes kind to someone, the individual gets attached to Him and he reaps all the rewards by serving Satguru (acting on His advice). --------- Guru Nanak becomes kind to that individual and he is connected to Waheguru. When that happens the individual spends the night (of his life) in comfort with his mind at perfect peace.

Meaning: if you recite Waheguru’s Naam and take a dip in the water of His Naam-Amrit, your mind and body both become healthy, oh my friend! (Waheguru’s Naam is the real liquid of immortality).  It is the most auspicious occasion when one takes Waheguru’s shelter which removes countless barriers and sins.  My Master answered my prayers and all my efforts were successful.  Guru Nanak is known all over the world for His such kindness.

Meaning: Waheguru is the master of countless worlds and is the provider for all living beings.  He nourishes and takes care of His Creation all the time, but I am such an ignorant person that I do not value even a single of His kindnesses.  --------- Yet not just me – an ignorant person – but countless other sinners have found salvation by “listening to” and having a “holy sight” of Guru Nanak, and they are never reborn.

§ Suhi M:5 (749). Jis kay sir ooper tu Suami so dookh kaisa paavay. Boal na jaanay maya mud maata murna cheet na aavay. --------- Giyan dhiyan kichhu kerm na jaana saar na jaana teri. Sabh tay vudda Satgur(u) Nanak(u) jin kul raakhee meri.

Meaning: Ordinarily, a person is so engrossed in Maya that He forgets Your Naam and never thinks about death under the intoxication of Maya, oh Waheguru!  But, how can a person under Your shelter suffer any discomfort, oh Waheguru!  I am also one of those ignorants who do not meditate on You, have no connection with You, do not perform even the accepted religious rituals, and have absolutely no knowledge of You, oh Waheguru! But, it is His kindness that the greatest of all, Guru Nanak has saved my dignity.
