SOHILA SAHIB

ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ  (ਪੰਨਾ 12-3)

NOTES: (1) Sohila Sahib is one of the three baanis (holy compositions) which are enshrined in Guru Granth Sahib and every Sikh is advised to recite them daily. The other two are Jap(u) Ji and Rehras Sahib. There are two other holy compositions – Jaap Sahib, and some Suvviyes - which the Sikhs are advised to recite daily. The last two Baanis are believed to be written by the Tenth Master – Guru Gobind Singh Ji- but they are not a part of Guru Granth Sahib.  Even though any holy composition can be recited at any time of the day, Sohila Sahib is advised to be recited at bed time.

(2) The name of this holy Baani is Sohila, and NOT Keertan Sohila as some people believe.
(3) The Shabads in Sohila Sahib have many metaphors used in them. Please pay attention to the deep meanings implied in them.
(4) You will notice that some words in Gurmukhi are spelled slightly differently using vowels in different places. Such differences highlight the beauty and the deepness of the grammar of Guru Granth Sahib. The use of vowels in different places for the same word signifies the difference in gender, noun and verb, and singular and plural. This makes the meanings perfectly clear.

ਗਉੜੀ ਦੀਪਕੀ ਮ:1 ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥ ਜੈ ਘਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ॥ ਤਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਸਿਵਰਿਹੁ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੋ॥1॥ ਤੁਮ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕਾ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ॥ ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੋਹਿਲੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਏ॥ 1॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਸਮਾਲੀਅਨਿ ਦੇਖੈਗਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ॥ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਨੈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨ ਪਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਦਾਤੈ ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁਮਾਰੁ॥2॥ ਸੰਬਤਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਤੇਲੁ॥ ਦੇਹੁ ਸਜਣ ਅਸੀਸੜੀਆ ਜਿਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ॥3॥ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਏਹੋ ਪਾਹੁਚਾ ਸਦੜੇ ਨਿਤ ਪਵੰਨਿ॥ ਸਦਣਹਾਰਾ ਸਿਮਰੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਦਿਹ ਆਵੰਨਿ॥4॥1॥

Raag Gauri Deepki M:1: Ek Onkar Sat Gur Parsad.  Jai gher keerat aakheeye Kertay ka hoye beecharo. Tit gher gaavhu Sohila siverhu Sirjanhaaro.1. Toom gaavhu mere Nirbhau ka Sohila. Houn waari jit Sohilaiy sda sukh hoye. 1. Pause. Nit nit jeearray smallian dekhaiga Devanhaar. Tere daanai keemat na puvvaiy tis Daate kuvan shumaar. 2. Sambat saha likhiya mil ker pavhu tel. Dehu sajjan asseesarriyaan jiyon hovaiy Sahib siyon mel. 3. Gher gher eho paahucha sudrray nit pavan. Suddenhara simriyai Nanak se dih aavan.4.1

Word Meanings: Jai =  Which;   Gher = holy gathering, book, mind;   Kertay = Creator’s;  Tit = in that;  Sohila =  song for joyous occasions, praise;  Sirjanhaaro = The Creatoe;   Nirbhau = Fearless God which is not subject to any natural laws;   Houn = I;   Waari = Offer my life;  Nit nit = all the time;  Jeearray =  Living beings;  Smallian = Taken care of;   Devanhaar = The Provider, Waheguru;  Daanai = Largesse;   Shumaar = Limit;    Sambat Saha = The date of (death);  pavhu tel= A marriage rite performed in preparation for the wedding;  Asseesarriyaan = Blessings;    Sahib = God, Waheguru;   Mel = . Paahucha =  Letter confirming the date and time of wedding;   Sudrray = Invitations;  Suddenhaara = The one who invites (Waheguru);   Simriyai =  Remember;  Dih = Date.

MEANING: Join the company of the holy men (or read the holy book) to sing Lord’s praise and ponder on His Magnanimity, and remember the True Creator, oh my friend!  1. Sing the joyous song of praise of the fearless (on whom no natural law applies) Waheguru. I will be glad to lay down my life for the song of praise of Waheguru which is always comforting in every which way.  Pause.  Waheguru looks after His creation all the time and provides for their needs. Let alone His magnanimity, you cannot even imagine the amounts of His bountiful largesses, oh man! 2.  The date and time of one’s meeting with Waheguru (death) is predetermined, so let us get ready for the Meeting just the way pre-wedding rites are performed for the bride or the groom. Beg for the blessings of the holy men so as to have with Him. 3. Like the letter fixing the date and time of wedding, every household (individual) receives such a letter from Waheguru. Such letters are being received all the time and we all will also get such a letter someday soon.  So, let us remember the sender – Waheguru - to have with Him.

ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮ:1॥ ਛਿਅ ਘਰ ਛਿਅ ਗੁਰ ਛਿਅ ਉਪਦੇਸ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸ ਅਨੇਕ॥1॥ ਬਾਬਾ ਜੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹੋਇ॥ ਸੋ ਘਰੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੋਇ॥1॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥ ਵਿਸੁਏ ਚਸਿਆ ਘੜੀਆ ਪਹਰਾ ਥਿਤੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਹੁ ਹੋਆ॥ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਏਕੋ ਰੁਤਿ ਅਨੇਕ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਵੇਸ॥2॥2॥

Raag Assa M:1. Chhe gher chhe gur chhe updesh. Gur Gur eko vase anek.1. Baba jai gher Kertay keerat hoye. So gher raakh vadaii tohe. 1. Pause. Visuye chassiyaan gherriyaan pehraan thitti vaari mah(u) hoya. Suraj eko root anek. Nanak Kertay ke kete vase. 2.2.

Word Meaning: Gher = Hindu holy books (Shastras);  Updesh = Teachings;  Vase = Clothings (forms);    Vadaii = Honour;    Visuye =  A very small unit of time;  Chassiyaan = Another small unit of time;  Gherriyaan = A period of 24 minutes;  Thitti =  Days bases on Lunar calendar;    Vaar(i) =  Days of the week;    Mah(u) = Months;  Root =  Seasons;    Anek = Countless;  Kertay =  The Creator’s.

MEANING: There are six Shastras and there are six different gurus (writers) - one for each - and each has a different message (teachings).  However, there is only one True Guru (God) of all the worldly gurus even though people believe in His countless forms. 1. You must have faith in and follow only the holy book in which the praise of the Creator, Waheguru, is sung because only that will get you honour in Waheguru’s Court, oh my friend!  Pause.

Look at the wonders of Waheguru, oh my friend! There is only one Sun, but there are many seasons which are made of months, days of the week, increasing and decreasing phases of the moon, and smaller periods of time.  Waheguru is present all the time no matter what the season is and what the day or    the time is.  Thus Waheguru seems to take infinite forms professes (Guru) Nanak.

ਰਾਗੁ ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮ:1॥ ਗਗਨਮੈ ਥਾਲੁ ਰਵਿ ਚੰਦੁ ਦੀਪਕ ਬਨੇ ਤਾਰਿਕਾ ਮੰਡਲ ਜਨਕ ਮੋਤੀ॥ਧੂਪੁ ਮਲਆਨਲੋ ਪਵਣੁ ਚਵਰੋ ਕਰੇ ਸਗਲ ਬਨਰਾਇ ਫੂਲੰਤ ਜੋਤੀ॥ 1॥ ਕੈਸੀ ਆਰਤੀ ਹੋਇ॥ ਭਵਖੰਡਨਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਰਤੀ॥ ਅਨਹਤਾ ਸਬਦ ਵਾਜੰਤ ਭੇਰੀ॥1॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥ ਸਹਸ ਤਵ ਨੈਨ ਨਨ ਨੈਨ ਹਹਿ ਤੋਹਿ ਕਉ ਸਹਸ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਨਨਾ ਏਕ ਤੁੋਹੀ॥ ਸਹਸ ਪਦ ਬਿਮਲ ਨਨ ਏਕ ਪਦ ਗੰਧ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਹਸ ਤਵ ਗੰਧ ਇਵ ਚਲਤ ਮੋਹੀ॥ 2॥ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ ਸੋਇ॥ ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਹੋਇ॥ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਖੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋਇ॥ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਆਰਤੀ ਹੋਇ॥ 3॥ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਮਕਰੰਦ ਲੋਭਿਤ ਮਨੋ ਅਨਦਿਨੋੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਆਹੀ ਪਿਆਸਾ॥ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਜਲੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਰਿੰਗ ਕਉ ਹੋਇ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਇ ਵਾਸਾ॥4॥3॥

Raag Dhanasari M:1.  Gagganmaiy thaal Ravi Chand deepak banay tarika mundal janak moti. Dhoop Mulyaanlo puvan chuvro kuray sagal banrai foolant joti. 1. Kaisi aarti hoye. Bhuvkhandna teri aarti. Anhata Shabad vaajant bheri. 1. Pause. Sehas Tuv nain none nain hai tohe kau sehas moorat nuna ek tohi. Sehas  pud bimal none ek pud gundh bin sehas Tuv gundh iv chalat mohi. 2. Subh meh jot jot hai soye. Tis dai chaanan subh meh chaanan hoye. Gur sakhi Jot pargat hoye. Jo Tis bhaave su aarti hoye. 3. Hur charan kunwal mukrand lobhit muno undino mohe aahi pyasaa. Kirpa jal deh Nanak saring kau hoye jaa te Teraiy Naaye waasa. 4.3.

Word Meaning: Gagganmaiy = Sky-like; Thaal = Platter; Ravi = Sun; Chand = Moon; Tarika Mundal = The stars in the sky; Janak Moti = Big pearls; Dhoop = Incense (fragrance); Mulyaanlo = The sandalwood breeze from the Mullya mountain; Chuvro = the whisk for respect; Banrai = Vegetation; Joti = The light of Waheguru; Kaisi = what wonderful!; Aarti = Veneration (Hindus show respect for their gods by moving a platter containing incense, flowers, lamps, and in some cases some kind of pearls too in a circular motion in front of the god; Bhuvkhundna = The destroyer of the birth-death-birth cycle i.e. Waheguru; Anhata = Uniform, Never changing; Bheri = Drum; Sehas = Thousands; Nain = Eyes; Moorat = Pictures, Forms; Pud = Feet; Bimal = Clean, Soft like lotus; Gundh = Smell i.e nose; Iv Chalat = Such Wonder-striking qualities; Mohi = Amazed; Jot Soye = The light of the same Waheguru; Tis Dai Chaanan = With the light of Waheguru; Gur Sakhi = Guru’s Teaching (Enlightenment); Pargat = Appears; Bhaave = As He likes; Charan Kunval Mukrand = The dust of the lotus-like feet of Waheguru; Lobhit Muno = Is Enchanting my mind; Undino = Everyday; Pyasaa = Thirst (Longing); Saring = A bird which drinks the first rain drop by raising his open beak; Jaa Te = From which; Waasa = Residence

NOTE: As mentioned under “Word Meaning” Hindus perform ritualistic aarti of their gods; but Guru Nanak Sahib explains in this holy Shabad that really Aarti of Waheguru is always taking place. It is believed that this holy Shabad was used by Guru Nanak Sahib to teach a Pundit the meaning of real Aarti who was performing the ritualistic aarti of a god in southern India.

MEANING: Oh my dear Waheguru! The sky is like a platter in which the Sun and the Moon are lamps and the stars are large pearls for Your Aarti. The fragrance of sandalwood from Mount Mullay acts like incense and the winds are serving like a whisk over the head of a king.  All the vegetation is serving like flowers for the Aarti of the light-like Waheguru. 1. What wonderful Aarti is taking place for You, oh Waheguru – the destroyer of the birth-death cycle of living beings!  The never changing Shabad (the life-sustaining power) is providing the drum music for the Aarti. Pause.

Even though You have no eyes (because You are formless) yet to enjoy this Aarti, you have thousands of eyes (because You are present in every living being). And because you are present in every living being, You have thousands of forms even though You are formless. For the same reason, even though you have no feet, yet You have thousands of lotus-like soft feet; and to enjoy the fragrance, You have thousands of noses even though You have none on Your person.  Noting such magical wonders, I am completely enchanted. 2. You are the Light which is present in every living being, but this fact is revealed only by the Guru. 3. Only that aarti is acceptable which is approved by You, oh Waheguru!  (The man must obey Your will).    Just like the bird saring who is always thirsty for the first drop of rain, I am always attracted to, and long for the dust of the lotus-like feet of Yours. Please be kind and grant me the dust of Your feet so that I may always reside at Your feet and recite Your Naam. 4.3.

ਰਾਗੁ ਗਉੜੀ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਮ: 4॥ ਕਾਮਿ ਕਰੋਧਿ ਨਗਰੁ ਬਹੁ ਭਰਿਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਖੰਡਲ ਖੰਡਾ ਹੇ॥ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਤ ਲਿਖੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਮੰਡਲ ਮੰਡਾ ਹੇ॥1॥ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਅੰਜੁਲੀ ਪੁਨੁ ਵਡਾ ਹੇ॥ ਕਰਿ ਡੰਡਉਤ ਪੁਨੁ ਵਡਾ ਹੇ॥ 1॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥ ਸਾਕਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕੰਡਾ ਹੇ॥ ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਚਲਹਿ ਚੁਭੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਡੰਡਾ ਹੇ॥ 2॥ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਭਵ ਖੰਡਾ ਹੇ॥ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਬਹੁ ਸੋਭ ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਾ ਹੇ॥3॥ ਹਮ ਗਰੀਬ ਮਸਕੀਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਵਡ ਵਡਾ ਹੇ॥ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਟੇਕ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਮੰਡਾ ਹੇ॥ 4॥4॥

Raag Gaurri Poorbi M:4. Kaam krodh nagar bahu bhariya mil sadhu khundal khunda hay. Poorab likhat likhe Gur paya mun Hur liv mundal munda hay. 1. Ker sadhu anjuli poon vudda hay. Ker dundaut poon vudda hay. 1. Pause. Saakat Hur rus saad na jaaniya tin unter haumein kunda hay. Jiuon jiuon chulhe chubhaiy dookh paavhe Jamkall suhhe sir dunda hay. 2. Hur jun Hur Hur Naam smaane dookh janam mern bhuv khunda hay. Abinashi Purakh paya Permasur buho sobh khund brahmunda hay. 3. Hum greeb muskeen Prabh tere Hur raakh raakh vud vudda hay. Jun Nanak Naam adhaar tek hay hur Naame hi sookh munda hay. 4.4

Word Meaning: Kaam = Lust; Nagar = City, World, Human mind; Sadhu = Guru; Khundal Khunda = Chopped, Destroyed; Poorab Likhat = As per the destiny based on previous life; Hur Liv = Be in unison with Waheguru; Mundal Munda = Decorate one’s heart; Anjuli = Bow with folded hands; Poon = Good deeds; Dundaut = Show respect by kneeling down completely (lying down on the belly); Saakat = Worshipper of Maya; Hur rus saad = The taste of with Waheguru; Haumein = Selfishness; Kunda = thorn; Chubhaiy = Pricks, Aches; Jamkall = The Angel of Death; Suhhe = Bears; Smaane = Absorbed; Bhuv = Life and death; Khunda = Chopped, Destroyed; Abinashi Purakh = The immortal Waheguru; Sobh = Honour, Praise; Khund Brahmunda = The entire Universe; Muskeen = Humble; Adhaar Tek = Support; Sookh Munda= Decorated (Blessed with all comforts).

MEANING: The human body is full of lust and rage, oh my friend! Only by surrendering to the Guru (taking shelter at His feet) can the effect of these powerful demons be dispelled.  However, full faith in Guru can be achieved only if one is destined to do so which is based on one’s deeds in his previous life. Once that happens, one achieves unison with Waheguru and the demons can be destroyed. 1. Pray to the Guru with folded hands and bow to Him while lying on your belly (just a sign of respect and faith) as this a noble deed, oh man! Pause.

The money-minded person has a thorn of selfishness (which causes discomfort) and cannot enjoy the taste of with Waheguru. As they tread in life they suffer from the fear of death. 2. The devotees are always lost in the thoughts of Waheguru (remember Him) and they have lost (overcome) the fear of life and death. They become one with the immortal Waheguru and their fame is spread all over the universe. 3.  We are humble and powerless, oh Waheguru!  We are your slaves. Oh Great Waheguru! Please protect us from the demons (so that we do not do any deeds which are not to Your liking). Your Naam is the support of Your slave, Nanak, oh Waheguru!  All the comforts lie in Your Naam. 4.4.

ਰਾਗੁ ਗਉੜੀ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਮ:5॥ ਕਰਉ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤਾ ਸੰਤ ਟਹਲ ਕੀ ਬੇਲਾ॥ ਈਹਾ ਖਾਟਿ ਚਲਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਆਗੈ ਬਸਨੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ॥1॥ ਅਉਧ ਘਟੈ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਾ ਰੇ॥ ਮਨ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰੇ॥ 1॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ਸੰਸੇ ਮਹਿ ਤਰਿਓ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ॥ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਜਗਾਇ ਪੀਆਵੈ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਤਿਨਿ ਜਾਨੀ॥ 2॥ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਆਏ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਹਾਝਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮਨਹਿ  ਬਸੇਰਾ॥ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਹੋਇਗੋ ਫੇਰਾ॥3॥ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਿਧਾਤੇ ਸਰਧਾ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਪੂਰੇ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਗੈ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਧੂਰੇ॥ 4॥5॥

Raag Gaurri Poorbi M:5. Kuroun benanti sunhou mere meeta sant tehal ki bela. Eehaan khat chulhou Hur laha aagaiy busn suhela.1. Audh ghutaiy dinus raina re. Mun Gur mil kaaj swaare.1. Pause. Ehu sanasar bikaar sunsay meh turiyo Brahm Gyani. Jishay jagaaye peaavaiy ehu rus akatth katha tin jaani.2. Ja kou aaye soyee bihaajhou Hur Gur te munhe basera. Nij gher mehal paavhou sookh sehjay bahur na hoyego fera. 3. Unterjaami Purakh Bidhaate sherdha mun ki pooray. Nanak Dass ehaiy sookh maangaiy mo kou ker santan ki dhooray. 4.5.

Word Meaning: Tehl = Service;     Bela = Time;   Eehaan = Here in this world;  Khat Hur Laha.  Profit from the service to Waheguru;   Aagaiy =  In the next world (after death);   Suhela =  Successful,  Comfortable;     Audh = Life;    Kaaj Swaare =  Achieve one’s Objective;   Bikaar = Useless;  Sunsay = Dualty, Uncertainty;   Akatth Katha = The working of the indescribable  Waheguru;  Bihaajhou = Deal in that;   Nij Gher = In one’s own heart;   Sehjay = Easily, Without any special effort;    Untejaami Purakh = The omniscient  Waheguru;  Bidhatay = The Creator;   Sookh Maangaiy =  Begs for the Bliss;   Santan Ki Dhooray = Sevant of the Saints (Humbleness)

MEANING: Oh my friend! Please listen carefully to my humble request (suggestion) that this life is the time to serve the Guru. The service to the Guru pleases Waheguru and you will earn the reward that you will have a comfortable future after death. 1. Your life is slipping away by the day and night; so take Guru’s refuge to achieve your goal (of being one with Waheguru), oh my mind. Pause.

This life is going useless because people are unclear about Waheguru’s definitive existence. Only the true devotee swims across the ocean of life (to be one with Waheguru). Only that individual enjoys the taste of the with the indescribable Waheguru whom Waheguru Himself awakens from ignorance.  2. You have been given this life for a purpose (to achieve unity with Waheguru), so please engage in that objective and take refuge of the Guru to harbour Waheguru’s Naam in your heart.  By doing so you will reside at Waheguru’s feet which will be your very own permanent home and you will never take birth again. 3. The last “5” at the end of the holy Shabad signifies that there are five Shabads in the holy composition – Sohila.
