THE DECISION: An Historical Play

Martyrdom of Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji

Scene: The court of the Nawab of Sarhind, Wazir Khan. It is a very cold mid-morning of Dec. 28, 1705. The court is full of high officials and some prominent citizens of Sarhind. Most of them seem to be sad and nervous, but a few seem to be excited. They are all awaiting the arrival of the Nawab anxiously because an extremely important and historical decision is going to be made about the two younger Princes – Sahibzada Zorawar Singh aged eight and Sahibzada Fateh Singh aged 6 – of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The Princes along with their grandmother, Mata Goojri Ji, got separated from Guru Sahib and the rest of the family after Guru Sahib had left Anandpur Sahib at the assurance of the joint armies of the Emperor Aurangzeb, and the Hindu Rajas of the hill states that if Guru Sahib vacated Anandpur Sahib, He would be free to live with dignity anywhere in the Country without any interference from the Governments. But the evil and immoral armies began to chase Guru Sahib soon after He had left, and attacked Him near Ropar (Roop Nagar) on the bank of the swollen Sirsa River. Because of the unsuspected attack by the enemy, everybody rushed to escape. Mata Goojri Ji, the mother of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the younger Princes were tricked by their 22 years-long chef, Gungoo, to go with him to his village, Kherri near Ropar.

TRAVELS OF GURU AMAR DASS JI

TRAVELS OF GURU AMAR DASS JI

Guru Amar Dass Ji selected 23 highly devoted Sikhs who had a deep knowledge of Gurbani and sent them to spread the Divine Message in different parts of the Country. Himself, He did not travel much, and spent most of His time in the central Punjab (Lahore, Amritsar and Gurdaspur) preaching Gurmat. However, He did undertake a single journey to visit a few holy places of Hindus to disseminate the Divine Knowledge just like Guru Nanak Dev Ji did. Guru Nanak Dev Ji had planned to visit either the holy places at the time of some special occasions where a large number of people would gather to take part in the occasion, or some religious leaders who had a large following. In either case, Guru Nanak Sahib was able to reach a large number of people and enlighten them in a single visit. Guru Amar Dass Ji did just that and visited Kurukshetra and other holy places along the banks of Jamuna and Ganga.

AARTI: RITUALISTIC AND REAL

Hindus worship all the natural powers – fire, water, air, earth and the sky.  Perhaps fire is the most worshiped of all these elements, and is also used in most of Hindu customs including weddings, havans, yuggs, and in the worship of the deities. Aarti is a very old custom and is performed at the end of a prayer to seek the blessings of the deity.  Hindus believe that performing aarti is the best expression of their devotion to a deity, and it pleases the deity. A clay lamp is filled with oil or butter-oil and is placed in a metal plate, and is lighted up.  Some flowers and incense are also placed in the plate and the plate is whirled in front of the deity in a clockwise direction. Bells are rung and some devotional songs are also chanted during the ceremony. After completion of the aarti, the plate is taken to everybody present at the ceremony when every person touches the plate and then they touch their faces with their hands.

HEMKUNT AND DOOKH-BHANJANI BERRY

HEMKUNT

Also known as Hemkund is a high altitude mountain in the Himalayas where Guru Gobind Singh Ji is said to have meditated for thousands of years and worshipped some goddess Maha Kaal Kalka in His previous incarnation. The completely baseless story is narrated in a book called Bachittar Naatak which a part of “Dasam Granth” – a book which is claimed to have been written by the Tenth Master Himself.    With the exception of one or two compositions which might have been written by Guru Sahib Himself, the rest of the book is a filthy and totally against the Principles of the first nine Guru Sahiban and of Guru Granth Sahib. It is highly blasphemous if someone claims that the book has been written by the Tenth Master.

AMRIT AND AMRITSAR

MYTHICAL AMRIT: Ever since the dawn of history, man has been searching for a liquid which if taken by him will make him immortal. Despite his best efforts, the man has not been able to find such a liquid which actually is against the fundamental principles of Nature because only God is eternal and everything else will come to an end someday including the whole universe. The Hindu gods are said to have churned the ocean to get Amrit, and they are said to have succeeded, but no Hindu god is alive today. So, what kind of Amrit was that?
